We have made it through Trimester 2! Please be proud of your student for all their hard work!

Remember, there is no school on Monday! This might be the perfect weekend to make sure your Scientific Method Project is done! Students need to do Slides 9, 10, and 11 at home! 

Also, there is an NWEA test next week. We have the Math NWEA test on Wednesday, March 11th. I will send a reminder email the day before with some test prep that you can do at home!

Here are some announcements for next week:
Read-A-Thon is still going on next week, so please have your students read!

Snack: Snack will only be 10 to 15 minutes, which includes brain breaks or going outside. Snack will not be an all-day event. I would like to have one of the Brighton Therapy Dogs come into our classroom, so I have put this rule in place to keep our Dogs safe.

AR: Students will try to meet their goal of 20 AR points for the 3rd Trimester. The AR Test can only be taken at school. Students will also get an AR Comprehension grade, which should be between 80% and 100%. 

Late/Absent Work: Students will have homework, and they will have absent work if they are not at school. All homework is written in the planner, and we put our daily work agenda on Google Classroom. If you have not yet joined Google Classroom, please do so soon so you can stay up to date on what is happening in class. I take 10% off for students who turn in late work since it is not turned in on time. Also, for absent work, students have as many days as they were absent, plus one day to complete it. For example, if your student is absent on Monday and returns to school on Tuesday, their absent work will be due on Thursday. 

Imagine Math and Lexia Weekly Goals: Each student has a goal to meet their Lexia goal of 20 units and their Imagine Math Lesson of 2 Lessons passed to complete each week. For the trimester, students still have 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete these goals in school. If students do not complete it, they will complete it during the DOGS reward. Remember, Lexia and Imagine Math can be done at home. I will make adjustments and accommodations as needed. Students who go to FLEX have a goal of 10 units and 1 lesson passed.

Reading Log: The Reading Log that was given out has 20 boxes for the students to complete each night they read. Once they complete the entire sheet, they will turn it in for a PAWSITIVE and receive a new one. This is not a grade, but a piece of paper to keep your student accountable to read. I will also check whether your student is taking the AR test to confirm they are reading books. Please encourage them to read 20 minutes at night at least 5 times a week. 

Students need to wear their ID cards and DOG tags every day. They may keep them here at school. This protocol is essential because Maltby is so large; if all students have their cards and tags on them, we can identify them during passing times.

Science: We are working on Changes Cycle 1. Students worked in groups this week to work on a Property of a material poster! All assignments are on Google Classroom

Homework: Read for 20 minutes for the Read-A-Thon and finish the Scientific Method Project!

I apologize for not sending this earlier, but my household got hit with the stomach flu. Thank you for your patience as I am navigating being a first-time mom and a teacher!

Anyways, we have 5 school days remaining in the 2nd trimester, so this week I will be finishing up grades and making sure students have turned in their work. Please check Student Connect later this week to see how your student is doing in 5th grade! 

There is NWEA test this week and next week. Tomorrow we have ther Reading NWEA test, and next Wednesday, March 11th we have the Math NWEA test. I will send reminder email the day before with some test prep that you can do at home! I already sent out an email this morning about tomorrow’s test!

This week's students worked hard with their group members to finish up their survival guide for the National Parks. I will take pictures of the final projects and post them in the Facebook group as each group presents! Please ask your student what they learned from their survival guide. 

Also, please ensure your student is reading at home. I have reviewed AR, and many students have not read a book this month, so they have little to no AR points. We have at least 10 to 15 minutes of reading each day, and they should read at least 20 minutes on 5 of the 7 days of the week. Every Friday, I will be doing an AR check to see how students are doing. We did one today, and 17/30 students are on track or have met their AR goals! 

We have 10 school days remaining in the 2nd trimester, so there is still plenty of time to meet their goals!

Last week, I was out sick on Thursday and Friday. It feels good to be back and the students are happy too!
As of last week, students took the first part of their Unit 5 Math Test, and are working in groups to create a survival guide on a National Park of their choosing. We have been doing lots of group work, so students are getting the chance to work with Ms. Forte’s students to create this guide. 

Our class is celebrating Valentine’s Day on Thursday, February 12th. This day will be filled with Valentine’s Day Activities for each Subject. Then, in the afternoon around 1:30 we will enjoy a film and a snack provided by myself and Mrs. Forte. We will be passing out Valentines that day and we will be decorating a bag in the morning so students can bring all their Valentine’s Day Goodies home with them. They do not need to bring in a box. For giving out valentines, please make sure if you are giving them out to give them out to each student in our class. If you want to give them to Mrs. Forte’s students, you can do so, but it is optional. 

Thank you so much to the Parents who volunteered to help us with the craft on Wednesday. I am sure the student will appreciate your help!

This week, we had some fun with the Grinch week! Please check Facebook for pictures of the two STEM activities we completed! The students had a great time, and it was fun to watch students work together to build a ladder and a water slide!

Imagine Math and Lexia Weekly Goals: Each student has a goal to meet their Lexia goal of 10 units and their Imagine Math Lesson of 1 Lesson passed to complete each week. For the trimester, students still have 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete these goals in school. If students do not complete it, they will complete it during the DOGS reward. Remember, Lexia and Imagine Math can be done at home. I will make adjustments and accommodations as needed. Students who go to FLEX have a goal of 5 units and 1 lesson passed.
Reading Log: The Reading Log that was given out has 20 boxes for the students to complete each night they read. Once they complete the entire sheet, they will turn it in for a PAWSITIVE and receive a new one. This is not a grade, but a piece of paper to keep your student accountable to read. I will also be checking if your student is taking AR test to see if they are reading books. Please encourage them to read 20 minutes at night at least 5 times a week. 
Students need to wear their ID cards and DOG tags every day. They are allowed to keep them here at school. This protocol is essential since Maltby is so big that if all students have their cards and tags on them, we can identify them in passing times.

Math: This week, we took our Unit 4 Test for I can statements A-C. Those went home today!
Reading/Writing: Students are working on reading informational text! We also began our research to write an article about the animal of their choosing. 
Science: This week, we did a lot of Grinch Activities! Please check out the self-portraits that the students did!
Homework: Read and Enjoy Break

This week, we had our first snow day! Yay! I hope everyone enjoyed their mid-week break! 

Students did a great job dealing with the adjustment, and we are getting back on track with academics. This week we had some students not complete homework on time, please check planners for the homework every night and I have started putting some assignments in the gradebook, so please check for missing assignments! The Key Learning Paper that goes home on Friday will also tell you if your student is missing work!

Some great news, our class did meet our goal of donating 300 cans/300 dollars to the Canned Food Prix! I will bring a treat next Friday as their reward! Thank you so much for your help! We were able to help so many families be able to enjoy a meal this holiday season! 

Here are some announcements for next week:
Spirit Week Monday, December 15 to December 19th!
Monday - Holiday Hat Day
Tuesday - Dress like a Snowman Day
Wednesday - Wear ALL RED Day
Thursday- Dress like your Favorite Holiday Character
Friday - Ugly Sweater Day

Snack: Snack will only be 10 to 15 minutes, which includes brain breaks or going outside. Snack will not be an all-day event. I would like to have one of the Brighton Therapy Dogs come into our classroom, so I have put this rule in place to keep our Dogs safe.

AR: Students will try to meet their goal of 15 AR points for the 2nd Trimester. The AR Test can only be taken at school. Students will also get an AR Comprehension grade, which should be between 80% and 100%. 

Late/Absent Work: Students will have homework, and they will have absent work if they are not at school. All homework is written in the planner, and we put our daily work agenda on Google Classroom. If you have yet to go onto Google Classroom, please do so soon so you know what is happening in class. I take 10% off for students who turn in late work since it is not turned in on time. Also, for absent work, students have as many days as they were absent, plus one day to complete it. For example, if your student is absent on Monday and returns to school on Tuesday, their absent work will be due on Thursday.

Reading/Writing: We started our Unit 2 on Informational text. Students are reading about different biomes and animals that live in those places. Students will start to research information on the animal of their choosing and start to plan how to write their informational article. 

Science: This week, we briefly started Go With the Flow Cycle 2. We will stop this unit for now, since next week we will be doing Grinch Week.

Homework: Do Homelink 4.3 and Math Boxes 4.3, Study for the Spelling test (now on Wednesday!) Read 20 minutes (fill out reading log if your student wants to)

This week, we started adjusting to our new normal. It has been a pleasure so far meeting all the students, and we are continuing to work together to make it a great year.

There are a couple of things that are different. Snack will only be 10 to 15 minutes, which includes brain breaks or going outside. Snack will not be an all-day event. Also, students now have a new Google Classroom, so please check it for Math and ELA family-related resources.

Another new thing is the Friday Folder. Students will take home a Friday Folder filled with work that they have completed. It will also include a Key Learning Sheet that will give you an update on their grades, AR points, weekly learning, and a little self-reflection. Please sign the sheet and turn in on Mondays. 

Lastly, for the Reading Log, I have decided to give a reading log that has 20 boxes that the students will need to complete each night that they read. Here are some announcements for next week:
December kicks off with our annual Can Prix Canned Food Drive to benefit Bountiful Harvest. This is an exciting event that the kids love, allowing us to give back to the community. Please send in canned food (no glass or expired food, please) in a bag marked with your child's homeroom on it. You may also donate online (please note your child's homeroom, so they get credit)  or send in cash or a check to the office. The kids are going to be so excited! 

Our annual Food Can Prix is coming up December 2nd – December 9th!! 
∙ Parents can send in cans from the pantry or dry goods with students – make sure to label your student’s homeroom!! 
∙ Students can also make monetary donations!! 
∙ Our kids win for learning to give back to the community!! 
The winning Maltby classroom of the Food Can Prix also gets to have their names on the Maltby trophy and keep it in their classroom for the remainder of the year!! 
For our class only, I challenged the students to bring in 10 canned food goods or 10 dollars to donate. If we meet our goal of 300 food items/dollars by December 9th, then I will give the students a special treat on Friday, December 19th. Also, it is just a challenge, and it is okay if you can not donate at this time. The purpose of this cause is to learn how to give back to our community.
Thanks to our PTO parent volunteers for their hard work on this. It is great to see the students get excited about giving back to the community. We are always very proud of our Maltby students and their families for their generosity.

Math: Students review concepts of the Unit 3 test, so I could see where they were at their fraction sense. We took a review quiz on Unit 3, and that will be in the gradebook later next week. 
Reading/Writing: We started our Unit 2 on Informational text. Students are reading about Ocean Life and will be writing an informational piece on an animal of their choosing. 
Science: We will be starting our new Unit next week. 
Homework: Study for the Spelling test, and read 20 minutes (fill out reading log if your student wants to)
