Hello, Parents!
Thank you for the families who came to Face to Face Conferences. It was so nice meeting you and speaking with you about your student! This week, students are working hard on place value, the power of 10, multiplication, writing using the five senses, and learning about food webs and chains. Go to Google Classroom to see Unit 2’s home links, family letters, and videos. I have uploaded many additional videos to help with multiplication. Also, regarding technology, students will need access to a computer at home to do Social Studies assignments and other subject-related activities. Please log into Google Classroom, Clever, and TCI (the social studies curriculum) at home. Please email me with any questions! I look forward to seeing students' writing as we complete them next week. This might be an opportunity for you to ask your students about the personal story they are writing about in class. Here are some announcements for next week: We will be celebrating Halloween on Thursday, October 31st. Our day will consist of math games, spooky writing, and reading, and we will end our day with a movie. This year, students can wear costumes to school. Remember it needs to be school-appropriate! Also, feel free to donate to our Halloween Day of Activities https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F4BADA629A6F8C07-52717519-halloween Students need to wear their ID Cards and DOG Tags every day, but they are allowed to keep them at school. This protocol is essential since Maltby is so big that if all students have their cards and tags on them, we can identify them in passing times. AR: Students will try to meet their goal of 15 AR points for the Trimester. The AR Test can only be taken at school. Students will also get an AR Comprehension grade, which should be between 80% and 100%. Late/Absent Work: Students will have homework, and they will have absent work if they are not at school. All homework is written in the planner, and we put our daily work agenda on Google Classroom. If you have yet to go onto Google Classroom, please do so soon so you know what is happening in class. I take 10% off for students who turn in late work since it is not turned in on time. Also, for absent work, students have as many days as they were absent plus one day to complete it. For example, if your student is absent on Monday and returns to school on Tuesday, their absent work will be due on Thursday. Planners: Please sign the planner every day! Math: Students are learning about place value, the power of 10, and multiplication. I have included the Family Letter for the unit and the answers to the homelinks in our Google Classroom. Also, if your student is absent, all the lesson videos are on Google Classroom. Reading/Writing: Students are planning their personal narrative stories about 5th Grade Camp. We will start the drafting process next week. Also, students are working on reading for AR every day. From now on, students will take their reading binder home and to school every day. Students are also working on Power Up (Lexia) and reading for AR points. Science: Students learn about disruptions in an ecosystem. Social Studies: Students took their Continents and Oceans quiz today. Homework: Homelink 2.5, Math Boxes 2.5 in Math Journal page 51, read for 20 minutes and fill out reading log Parent to-do list:
I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! GO Green! Mrs. Orrico

Happy October! We had a fantastic week in 5th grade! Students are working hard to learn how to write a CERER in ELA for our read-aloud Restart and continue their understanding of volume in rectangular prisms. We will have Part 2 of the Unit 1 Math test on Tuesday. Students also had fun implementing the four C’s (Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking) in our STEAM Mania for Science today. Also, we are facing some challenges with homework and absent work. Students will have homework, and they will have absent work if they are not at school. All homework is written in the planner, and we put our daily work agenda on Google Classroom. If you have yet to go onto Google Classroom, please do so soon so you know what is happening in class. Math:This week we continued our learning in volume and extending that idea into finding the volume of irregular prism. We will have a test on Tuesday, October 8th on finding the volume of prisms irregular prisms. Remember, students can use their math review, homelinks, math journal pages, and math boxes to study all unit long. Students need 15 points for AR by November 22nd. Remember, they are only reading one book! This book is the same book they read at home and school. Science: Students continue practicing writing CERER by reading a text, highlighting evidence, and then using reasoning to support their claim. We also started learning about biomes and different types of biomes. Social Studies: Students are working on the three branches of government.
