MSTEP Testing is DONE!

5/9/2025

Hello, Parents!

MSTEP Testing is officially done! The students did great! If your student was absent this week, then they will finish sometime next week!

This week we finished our last two lessons in Unit 6, and we will be testing on Unit 6 on Tuesday! Students also shared our last book club unit for the year today! Remember, book club books are only read at school during ELA time. Students will have plenty of time to read, write their sticky notes, and finish their book club assignments with that time. There should be no need for them to have book club homework.

It is the final push to the end of the year. At school, we are making sure expectations are still being met and routines are happening correctly.

Also, I have updated my gradebook, so please take a moment this weekend to look over your students’ grades. There is still time for students to improve their reading grade by making sure their AR goal is met.

Here are some announcements for the week:
Last Houses Meeting on Tuesday, May 20th

No School on Monday, May 26th

All Library Books due on Friday, May 30th

Students must wear their ID Cards and DOG Tags daily, but they are allowed to keep them at school. This protocol is essential since Maltby is so big that if all students have their cards and tags on them, we can identify them in passing times.

AR: Students will try to meet their AR points goal for the third Trimester. The AR Test can only be taken at school. Students will also get an AR Comprehension grade, which should be between 80% and 100%. AR points are due on Tuesday, June 10th!

Late/Absent Work: Students will have homework, and they will have absent work if they are not at school. All homework is written in the planner, and we put our daily work agenda on Google Classroom. If you have yet to go onto Google Classroom, please do so soon so you know what is happening in class. I take 10% off for students who turn in late work since it is not turned in on time. Also, for absent work, students have as many days as they were absent, plus one day to complete it. For example, if your student is absent on Monday and returns to school on Tuesday, their absent work will be due on Thursday.

Imagine Math and Lexia Weekly Goals: Each student has a goal to meet their Lexia goal of 20 units and their Imagine Math goal of 2 Lessons passed to complete each week. For the trimester, students still have 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete these goals, but I am assigning it as homework every day so it can be done by Friday. If students do not complete it, they will sign the responsibility binder on Friday Morning. I understand that students are absent, but Lexia and Imagine Math can be done at home. I will make adjustments and accommodations as needed. Students who go to FLEX have a goal of 10 units and 1 lesson passed.

Planners: Please sign the planner every day!

Math: We are testing on Unit 6 on Tuesday! Students can start studying over the weekend using Math Boxes and their Math Journal.  I have included the unit Family Letter and the answers to the home links in our Google Classroom. If your student is absent, all the lesson videos are also on Google Classroom.

Reading/Writing: Students are working on AR reading and getting ready for book clubs! We started our work today!

AR: Students also work on reading for AR every day. From now on, they will take their reading binder home and to school every day. They are also working on Power Up (Lexia).

Science: Students have been learning about what Matter is and what it is made of. All lessons are on Google Classroom.

Social Studies: Students are learning about the colonies.

Homework: Homelink 6.12, and Math Boxes 6.12 on MJ page 228, Read 20 minutes, and fill out the reading log.

Math: We have completed our learning for Unit 4. We will take the Unit 4 Part 2 Test on Monday. Students have Test Review Homework that is due on Monday. I have included the Family Letter for the unit and the answers to the home links in our Google Classroom. If your student is absent, all the lesson videos are also on Google Classroom.

Reading/Writing: Students have been learning about Main Ideas with supporting details in nonfiction text. If students are absent, the lessons are on Google Classroom. We will start our Nonfiction one-pager project today and will continue to work on it next week.

AR: Students also work on reading for AR every day. From now on, they will take their reading binder home and to school every day. They are also working on Power Up (Lexia) and reading for AR points due on Friday, March 14th!

Science: Students wrote a compare-and-contrast essay on physical and chemical change. Then, they started the first lesson on changes. Lastly, students are practicing their scientific method presentations. We will begin presentations on Monday.

Social Studies: Students are learning about explorers.

Homework: Math Test Review Homework, Study for Unit 4 Math Test,  Finish reading their nonfiction book (if didn’t finish in class),  Practice Scientific Method Project Presentations, read for AR, and fill out the reading log.

Hello, Parents!
There are two more weeks until the end of the trimester. Please make sure to check your students’ grades on Parent Connect. There is still plenty of time to turn in missing assignments and meet their AR goals.
The trimester ends on Friday, March 14th!

Also, this is the last weekend for the scientific method project! It is due on Monday, March 3rd! Please refer to Google Classroom for the rubric to see if your child has met all criteria! When your student completes their Google Slide Presentation, they can turn it in on Google Classroom.
I am looking forward to seeing all the projects!

Here are some announcements for the next trimester:
NWEA Reading Test on Tuesday, March 4th - Makeup Day on Wednesday, March 5th
If you want your student to prepare for this test, then your student could:
  • Do Lexia
  • Try Out Practice Tests for Reading on https://www.prepdog.org/5th-grade.htm

NWEA Math Test on Tuesday, March 11th - Make Up Day on Wednesday, March 6th

If you want your student to prepare for this test, then your student could:
  • Do Imagine Math
  • Try Out Practice Tests for Math on https://www.prepdog.org/5th-grade.htm

Students must wear their ID Cards and DOG Tags daily, but they are allowed to keep them at school. This protocol is essential since Maltby is so big that if all students have their cards and tags on them, we can identify them in passing times.

AR:
Students will try to meet their AR points goal for the 2nd Trimester. The AR Test can only be taken at school. Students will also get an AR Comprehension grade, which should be between 80% and 100%. AR points will be due on Friday, March 14th!

Late/Absent Work:
Students will have homework, and they will have absent work if they are not at school. All homework is written in the planner, and we put our daily work agenda on Google Classroom. If you have yet to go onto Google Classroom, please do so soon so you know what is happening in class. I take 10% off for students who turn in late work since it is not turned in on time. Also, for absent work, students have as many days as they were absent plus one day to complete it. For example, if your student is absent on Monday and returns to school on Tuesday, their absent work will be due on Thursday.

Planners:
Please sign the planner every day!

Math:
Students took a mini quiz on Coordinate Grids today! We are looking to test for the rest of Unit 4 on Friday, March 7th.  I have included the Family Letter for the unit and the answers to the home links in our Google Classroom. If your student is absent, all the lesson videos are also on Google Classroom.

Reading/Writing:
Students have been learning about reading complex nonfiction text. The lessons are on Google Classroom if students are absent.

AR:
Students also work on reading for AR every day. From now on, they will take their reading binder home and to school every day. They are also working on Power Up (Lexia) and reading for AR points, which are due on Friday, March 14th!

Science: We are learning about Physical and Chemical Changes. On Monday, we will move to our Changes Unit. Remember, scientific method projects are due Monday!

Social Studies: Students took the test on Chapter 4 today!

Homework: Work on the Scientific Method Project, reading for AR, and filling out the reading log.
Parent to-do list:
