Hello, Parents!
We had a great week finishing Part 1 of Unit 3 and Text Structure Unit! I gave the tests to students today for you to see during the break! Today, we spent the morning doing a read-in and making binary code ornaments! I brought in some hot chocolate for students to enjoy during our read-in since they met the class goal! Then, in the afternoon, we watched a movie and spent quality time together! Here are some announcements for the next trimester: Winter Break is from December 21st to January 5th! I will see every one back at school on Monday, January 6th! Students need to wear their ID Cards and DOG Tags every day, but they are allowed to keep them at school. This protocol is essential since Maltby is so big that if all students have their cards and tags on them, we can identify them in passing times. AR: Students will try to meet their goal of 15 AR points for the 2nd Trimester. The AR Test can only be taken at school. Students will also get an AR Comprehension grade, which should be between 80% and 100%. Late/Absent Work: Students will have homework, and they will have absent work if they are not at school. All homework is written in the planner, and we put our daily work agenda on Google Classroom. If you have yet to go onto Google Classroom, please do so soon so you know what is happening in class. I take 10% off for students who turn in late work since it is not turned in on time. Also, for absent work, students have as many days as they were absent plus one day to complete it. For example, if your student is absent on Monday and returns to school on Tuesday, their absent work will be due on Thursday. Planners: Please sign the planner every day! Math: We are finished with Unit 3, Part 1! We will be starting Lesson 3.8 when we return from winter break! I have included the Family Letter for the unit and the answers to the home links in our Google Classroom. Also, if your student is absent, all the lesson videos are on Google Classroom. Reading/Writing: Students are done with Text Structure! We will start book clubs when we come back from break! Students will have classwork, which is all on Google Classroom. AR: Students also work on reading for AR every day. From now on, students will take their reading binder home and to school every day. Students are also working on Power Up (Lexia) and reading for AR points. Science: Students are done learning about the Earth’s Spheres. We will be moving onto the Water Cycle next! Social Studies: Students are learning about American Indians Homework: No Homework - Unless you have absent work! If you student is bored, then I would suggest reading, Lexia, or Imagine Math. Students can work on AR points. They just can't take the quiz until they get back to school on January 6th. Parent to-do list:
If you have any questions, then please email me at [email protected]. I hope everyone has a relaxing and joyous Winter Break! I am wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Also, Happy Holidays for all! Take this time to be with family and loved ones! Relax, sit on the couch, and enjoy! Mrs. Orrico

What a short week! The students got started on Unit 3 in Math and we finish our figurative language learning. We will have our figurative language test on Monday! REMEMBER: Our annual Food Can Prix is happening until, Tuesday, December 10th!! ∙ Parents can send in cans from the pantry or dry goods with students – make sure to label your student’s homeroom!! ∙ Students can also make monetary donations!! ∙ Our kids win for learning to give back to the community!! The winning Maltby classroom of the Food Can Prix also gets to have their names on the Maltby trophy and keep it in their classroom for the remainder of the year!! For our class only, I challenged the students to bring in 10 canned food goods or 10 dollars to donate. If we meet our goal of 300 food items/dollars by December 10th, then I will give the students a special treat on Friday, December 20th. Also, it is just a challenge, and it is okay if you can not donate at this time. The purpose of this cause is to learn how to give back to our community. Thanks to our PTO parent volunteers for their hard work on this. It is great to see the students get excited about giving back to the community. We are always very proud of our Maltby students and their families for their generosity. Here are some examples of what items you can donate:
